This week, a first grade teacher lost her battle to cancer. It wasn’t the way we thought the story was going to go when the school year opened and the entire staff wore yellow on the first day of school to support and encourage her.
It’s a gut-wrenching story, yet the principal led with compassion. The mantra this week became be gentle with yourself and others.
Sometimes celebration quietly claims space in our hearts. When there’s nothing to celebrate, it’s a brave choice to be gentle with yourself. Being gentle is a celebration.
Too many times I’ve wondered if CELEBRATE This Week is worthwhile.

Ruth – I appreciate the grit to keep celebrations going and your honest celebrations make sense of life and allow the simple to be important. Life has challenges, teaching has challenges, celebrations remind us of goodness. Thank you.
Dear Ruth, I am sorry for the loss of one of your colleagues. What a sad time for her family, the staff and students. Thank you for your wise words of quiet celebrations, gentleness in actions. We have a greeting engraved on a large stone outside at my school: “A little Consideration, a little Thought for Others, makes all the difference.”– Pooh's Little Instruction Book, inspired by A. A. Milne I would say that the thought for others can also include oneself. Hugs to you, too.
Ruth, So glad to be a part of your Celebration community. Your post is beautiful.
Your little push to celebrate each week has made me a stronger writer and a better person. Thanks!
Ruth, Thank you for inspiring me each week to celebrate. I agree with Margaret…it's made me better, in so many ways! I am so sorry for the loss of the first grade teacher. That's so hard, but the words “Be gentle with yourself” are so powerful! Thank you again!
I am so sorry for the loss to your school community. I am so thankful that you decided to take the step and help other recognize the celebrations in our lives.
Thanks for creating a celebratory space for all of us. Happy 100!
“Celebration rewrites the story I'm living.” Yes Ruth, it most certainly does. It has changed my mood from dark to light many, many times. I thank you a thousand times and a thousand more for making this possible for me. I am not sure I would have figured it out on my own, No, I am pretty sure I would not have. Julieanne encouraged me to join you on Saturdays, and I am thankful to her too.
I am so sorry about the death of your friend.
Such wise words to see bravery in being gentle. I am sorry for your loss. We lost a teacher at our school to cancer about 8 years ago. She is still with us in so many ways. Your reasons to celebrate resonate. This is such an important and generous community. Thank you for bringing us together each week.
Celebration slows me down and reminds me to notice and pay attention. It's a gift you've given us. Some weeks are shout it from the rooftop celebrations, but most weeks are simply spent looking back and recognizing ordinary moments that are made beautiful in the remembering. Many of us have been here for those weeks when it was hard to celebrate. You've modeled that for us by showing up even during the difficult times. I celebrate the connections of this weekly gathering.
Even though I haven't been linking up as often lately, I am always finding those quiet celebrations. It is what has kept me sane through some pretty rough times in the past few months. I am so glad that you started this community and I am grateful for the nudge into thinking this way and making the efforts to always find something to celebrate. I am so sorry to hear about your colleague. What a difficult time for your school community.
I am so sorry to hear about your loss. Thank you again for all you do to help us find and acknowledge celebrations in the ups and downs of life.
Ruth, You and your celebration link up has made such a difference in how I view the world, at least on the weekends. I don't think my words here can express my gratitude. The call to celebrate is bold when things are not feeling very celebratory. To be brave enough to keep doing this says a lot about your spirit. Hugs and thanks to you.
Even if I don't always get a post done, I'm now always thinking of what I have to celebrate thanks to you. You are an beautiful force in this world Ruth Ayres. I can't image my life without you!
Ruth, your digital inspiration for the week and the thought, “Be gentle with yourself”, are ones that will stay with me. I am saddened by the news you shared. Loss is very difficult but must be heartbreaking for your faculty and students. Life is fragile and uncertain that is why an attitude of gratitude is necessary.
It's worthwhile.
Isn't it kind of awesome that we celebrate so consistently that it doesn't have to come with fanfare? From celebrating every week, I've realized that celebration can come with confetti or candles but it can come just as fiercely with a quiet Friday morning phone call or an extra squeeze at the end of a hug. However it happens, celebration matters. <3
Ruth, thank you for starting and maintaining this focus on focusing on the good in our lives. I too hold the “Be gentle with yourself” phrase in my heart as we all are reminded this week of the fragility of life.
Ruth, by being you, opening your heart even when you are unsure, you have inspired many blessings. You've carved another path, a different filter, to view the moments in our lives and a specific place to write about them. You have changed my thinking and Saturdays are different even if I do not always write. Even when my life has been at it's most challenging I am encouraged by knowing this space is here. I strive to see a celebration. Maybe especially then the small spark of celebration breaks the darkness. God bless you, my friend!
Ruth, thank you for encouraging us to look for the celebrations, to celebrate thru the hard as well as the fun. I know look for the celebrations even if I don't get them posted each week. My life has been blessed and enriched because of you.
I am sorry to hear of your loss. I hope stories will comfort you and the staff.
