This may have just went to the top of my favorite books. I’ve read it in a 2nd grade, 5th grade, and 6th grade classroom. Although there were many reactions throughout the book because of the slightly wicked humor, in the end it was unanimously loved by all. 
The top of the food chain can be lonely, so these carnivores decide to change in order to fit in. Only it doesn’t work out so well for them. In the end, the wisest carnivore of them all, the owl, offers a bit of advice: “We’re not bad…eating meat is just what we do.”

This picture book is not just for kids. No matter the age group, I’m sure you will find a good use for this book. Betsy Likens, 6th grade teacher, used this text for inspiration for a writer’s notebook list called: I’m a… (Throughout the end of the story there is a repeating line “I’m not bad…eating meat is just what I do…I’m a carnivore.”)

  1. I HAVE to check this book out! Love the humor. Love the premise of the book. What if animals switched it up a little bit??? Great discussions and thinking can only evolve from such a book.

    And, no, I don't think we can really call hot dogs a meat. Can we? Hmmm… questions to ponder. Thanks for the opportunity to win a copy for my classroom library!

  2. I had it in my hands, but returned it to the shelf to get another day. I guess that other day has arrived, but first I will cross my fingers and wish upon a star that this book will arrive on my doorstep.

  3. I LOVE LOVE LOVE this book too! I have used it for predicting so far and my kids loved it! I can't wait to use it for other mini-lessons!!! P.S. just pre-ordered Celebrating Writers! I can't wait for your book!

Ah, this is killing me- I keep discovering all these new books that I desperately want to write about in my blog, but I am also very aware of the fact that I'm trying to start up my own law practice and have big student loans, so I shouldn't be spending so much money on children's books! This fits in perfectly w/ a Charlotte's Web/carnivore guilt blog I had in mind since I recently just moved to a farm. I might have to splurge. Thanks for the review!
