A Birthday Every Day

We were standing in the office of Jordan’s new school. The secretaries — there are two and they are the kind of school secretaries all schools should have — asked, “So, what do you think of all of this.”

Jordan didn’t answer right away. He smiled and I was ready to say something for him when the words started tumbling out of his mouth:

“I feel like God is pouring His blessings down on me. Getting my forever family is like getting to have my birthday every single day for the rest of my life.”

We were speechless, blinking back tears, because, really, any response simply takes the magic out of his words.

His happiness is palpable. His joy runs deep. His giggles sometimes bubble out just because he can’t contain them any longer.

I am reminded of Nehemiah 8:10, The joy of the Lord is your strength. He is a reminder to me that no matter how difficult life is, the joy of the Lord can shine through.

  1. How powerful! What I love about this is knowing that the other side of it is that a big part of the way he is feeling is surely because of the way that your family has been setting up the transition. I noticed that he was using the same words you do with “forever family”. Maybe that is the words others used as well to talk to him, but I could see the influence of the words you are using and the impact it must be having on his transition. Then, of course, it looks like he is going to have quite the impact on those around him as well!

  2. Wow. I'm teary just imagining the joy this little guy feels every day when he wakes up in his own bed…and steps up to his own closet…and walks into his own kitchen where his own family is waiting. It's the little things that, to him, are the most incredible blessings ever. May we all have his perspective each day. Congratulations, Jordan! Congratulations, Ruth & Andy!
